The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a UN designated Day that was first observed in 2012, at the UN Headquarters in New York. The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of East African Community, Labour and Social Protection (MEACL&SP), State Department of Social Protection launched the Day on 16th June, 2014. Since then the day is observed annually on the 15th June with various activities including a rally to create awareness on elder abuse among the general public.

The main objective of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is to provide an opportunity for communities to raise awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting older persons that lead to elder abuse and neglect. The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2017 UN theme: “Understand and End Financial Abuse of Older People: A Human Right Issue” and the localized theme is “Old is gold, Understand and Stop Abuse of Older Persons”

The objective is to frame the financial exploitation and material abuse of older persons in the context of human rights. These is geared towards creating awareness and understanding forms of elder abuse and discuss ways of ensuring participation of older adults themselves in ending victimization. Elder abuse remains one of the least investigated and addressed social problem.   Financial exploitation and material abuse of older persons is a common and seriously neglected problem that often goes unreported. However there are other forms of abuse including:

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Psychological
  • Sexual
  • Neglect

As such there is need to empower older persons to  enjoy their human rights regardless of their age by active participation and   integration as members of the  society. This calls for need to continue advocating for the rights of older persons and to ensure they are sufficiently protected and hence the importance of creating awareness by celebrating the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
